The #1 Reason to Never Buy a Used Hair Dryer

According to a study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of thrift, consignment and resale ("thrift") shops, 20% of general thrift stores sell hair dryers without protection against electrocution. Older hair dryers are not the best hand hair dryers and pose a risk of electrocution.

How Hair Dryers Work

Hair dryers speed up the process of drying your hair after washing. Inside the hair dryer, a heating element or coil heats up to a given termperature and a motor driven fan forces hot hair out the end you hold near your hair. The best distance to keep between your hair and your hair-dryer is about 30 cm. Most hair dryers have an on / off switch and some models let you set the heating temperature.

Many models of hair dryers come with a bimetallic switch to prevent overheating, so for example, if the temperature of the hair dryer reached 140 degrees - which could burn you - the switch shuts the motor off. Some models also include a fuse in the heating element circuit, which breaks the circuit if the heat gets too high. Insulation keeps the outside of the hair dryer from getting too hot to handle.

Never leave a hair dryer near a sink, tub or bucket of water. Even if unplugged, the hair dryer could be damaged if immersed in water. Never use hair dryers on wet floors because of the risk of electrocution. Also note that blow dryers emit EMFs (elecro-magnetic frequencies) from 200 to 400 mG which may be dangerous levels of exposure from hair dryers.
